Recensione: “Architettura dell’Informazione” di Luca Rosati

Ogni considerazione qui presente è frutto di un’interpretazione personale dei concetti illustrati nel libro e pertanto esprime solo ed esclusivamente il mio punto di vista e non quello dell’autore. In previsione di future recensioni, tale premessa verrà sempre riportata al fine di evitare possibili disguidi fra me e i lettori.

Introduzione

Pur non sapendo ancora chi fosse effettivamente Luca Rosati, rimasi stupito dal fatto di aver trovato sotto alla voce Informatica un libro scritto da un italiano. L’argomento sembrava interessante e meritava la mia attenzione per il semplice fatto di essere in gran parte estraneo a tutto ciò che studio quotidianamente quando mi metto davanti allo schermo. Architettura dell’Informazione non è un libro che tenta di porre rimedio ai mille disastri che nascono dall’incapacità di gestire correttamente l’informazione che ci circonda: Luca Rosati si limita a spiegare egregiamente cosa significa organizzare l’informazione e quale impatto ha tale pratica con gli utenti. Sono bastate 150 pagine per farmi cambiare completamente idea in merito all’argomento, stravolgendo ogni tipo di convinzione che avessi acquisito prima della lettura di questo libro.

Spazio fisico e digitale

Il primo insegnamento di Luca Rosati è che l’Architettura dell’Informazione riguarda tanto lo spazio fisico quanto lo spazio digitale. In fondo, un supermercato e un sito web hanno molti punti in comune: entrambi sono mercati per la vendita di prodotti nei quali il cliente interagisce col prodotto attraverso un’interfaccia studiata ad hoc. In un caso la merce si misura in chili o grammi, litri o millilitri, metri o millimetri; nell’altro in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes e così via. In un caso si può stabilire un contatto diretto con l’oggetto desiderato; nell’altro bisogna imitare questa percezione dello spazio attraverso precise tecniche d’interazione con l’utente, tese ad aumentare il livello complessivo di satisficing, cioè soddisfacimento con il minimo sforzo.

Per quanto quindi l’ambiente possa variare (e insieme ad esso la concezione di spazio e tempo), la mentalità dell’utente resta la medesima (con giustificabili variazioni che dipendono da un discreto numero di variabili quali pazienza del soggetto, capacità di adattamento, orientamento, e così via).

L’artefatto e l’intermediario

Il prodotto arriva sulle pagine web più velocemente che sugli scaffali. Fino ad oggi l’utente è sempre entrato in gioco in questa fase, quella di acquisto e raggiungimento (in termini fisici o digitali) dell’artefatto. E’ il risultato di un lungo processo che a partire dall’ambiente (negozio, sito web e così via) porta l’utente e il prodotto al traguardo desiderato. Ma se sia l’utente che il processo acquistassero accezioni differenti? Luca Rosati insegna che è necessario svecchiare il ruolo del soggetto (l’utente) nei confronti dell’oggetto (il prodotto). L’utente diventa intermediario e l’artefatto diventa processo. L’uso del prodotto contribuisce a garantirne un’evoluzione perpetua e continua. In poche parole, l’oggetto compie una metamorfosi che segue gli schemi dettati dal soggetto: in base ai come, ai perché, ai dove e ai quando dell’utente in merito all’utilizzo del prodotto, quest’ultimo subirà trasformazioni diverse. Il processo non finisce, ma viene continuamente arricchito dal feedback dell’utenza intermediaria (vedi oggetti-SPIME e società sincronica).

L’interazione

Questo slittamento da utente a intermediario e da artefatto a processo implica un maggior dinamismo anche a livello di design. In particolare, alla parola interfaccia va sostituita quella di interazione. L’interfaccia riguarda le soluzioni di design adottate nel singolo contesto, mentre l’interazione li coinvolge tutti. E’ opportuno rivisitare e rafforzare il concetto stesso d’interazione affinché quest’ultima abbracci i molteplici punti di contatto con l’utenza, rendendo omogeneo il modello organizzativo sia del negozio che del sito web che lo rappresenta. Non si tratta, come spiega Luca, di riproporre soluzioni visive e di interfaccia tali e quali nei diversi contesti […] Si tratta - al di là delle specifiche differenze d’interfaccia - di mantenere costante il modello di interazione uomo-informazione. Da un design rivolto al singolo artefatto si passa in definitiva al design dell’interazione stessa.

Le (ovvie) conclusioni

Un libro che non lascia spazio a delusioni e merita più di una lettura. Interessante sotto tutti gli aspetti, filosofico per certi versi e anche molto esigente in merito alle aspettative da porsi per il futuro. Senza dubbio un must per chi si lascia trasportare dalle continue disgressioni che infestano blog, forum e mailing list su usabilità, design, semantica e così via. In effetti, Architettura dell’Informazione è un libro coerente e lo dimostra il fatto che Luca sia riuscito perfettamente a convincermi che il suo secondo libro è (ancora per poco) un pezzo mancante della mia piccola collezione di splendidi saggi su webdesign e webdevelopment.
